What To Know About Asphalt Shingles

If you need to replace your roof, you have probably started researching roofing products. Did you find that 8 in 10 roofs have asphalt shingles? An asphalt roof is durable, affordable and easy to install. However, there are a few things you should know about the different varieties: fiberglass, laminate and organic shingles.

Fiberglass Shingles

Fiberglass shingles are mats made of glass fibers. Urea-formaldehyde is used to bond the fibers into mats and reinforce their structure, improving their durability. To make the mat waterproof, mineral asphalt is applied to the mat.

Although these shingles are highly durable, they are no match for their heavier counterparts, laminate or organic shingles.

Laminated Shingles

Laminate shingles are also made from fiberglass. However, they are produced using multiple mats dipped in asphalt, making them much thicker, heavier and more durable. They are also coated in granules to make them fire-resistant.

This type of shingle is typically called architectural shingles. Although they cost more than other types of asphalt shingles, they are much more durable. However, before they are installed, you need to know whether your roof structure can handle their weight in addition to any snow load you can expect.

Organic Shingles

Organic shingles are made from asphalt-dipped paper. These papers are then layered to increase their strength. The top layer is embedded with ceramic, tin and copper granules.

Organic shingles are a mid-range option. They are heavier and more durable than fiberglass shingles, but they aren’t as strong and heavy as laminated varieties.

Choosing Your Asphalt Roof Product

Your climate is a primary consideration when choosing your roofing. For example, if you receive significant hail, a stronger, thicker product may be the best choice. If you receive a lot of snow, you may choose a lighter option to reduce the stress on your roof’s framing. However, your budget will play a key role in the type of asphalt shingles you choose.
